Voting Question: My husband and I purchased our 1st home last April. The house was bank owned and needed tons of work.?

We've taken our house from an eyesore property to a livable home. Recently we wanted to get a privacy fence due to our nosy elderly neighbors, but to our surprise they called the city on us and we came to find out that our fence can only be 6' and not the 8' that we built. We went around the neighborhood and found that several houses had fences and bushes that exceeded 6'. We now have to go in front of a zoning board to determine if our fence can be 8'. I wrote the mayor as well to express our dilemma, but no response as of yet. What are our rights? Our yard backs up to a very busy street, so not only is it for privacy its a safety concern as well.
